Athletics

Our wrestling team are heading to their first tournament next week at William D. Pratt. Students need to attend the weigh-in on Monday during lunch and have their fees and forms handed in before they can compete. Girls wrestle on Thursday, November 30 and boys go on Friday, December 1 with warmups starting at 3:30. Both events are expected to finish by 8:30 pm. Go Thunder!

Our basketball teams had playoffs this last week with three of our teams playing on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.  Our junior boys had a super close match with Ted Harrison but came up just short losing by 3.  Our junior girls also lost in a game that was really close losing by 1 in a wild finish.  Our senior girls won their quarter final game winning handily and then came up against Crossing Park in the semi finals and lost to get eliminated.  Our senior boys team played in the semi final game on Wednesday night and came up on top and will be playing in the finals on Monday at Nelson Mandela school at 8:15 pm for the championship.  We are so proud of all of our athletes this year and we wish the senior boys the best of luck in their game in the finals.  If the boys are to win the championship they will move on to the city championships and play winners from other divisions.

Physical Education

A reminder that we will be doing some outdoor modules during winter months and the students need to come prepared with jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves or mitts and boots can be beneficial too to keep feet from getting cold

Our Grade 9 students will be going to Winsport located in the City of Calgary to participate in a full day of Ski and Snowboard Lessons. There are only 120 spots for this field trip due to Winsport’s availability of instructors that day. We will take students on a on a first come first serve basis based on forms handed in to the Physical Education Office. Grade 9 students must have forms and payment in by Thursday December 14th to secure a spot. Any students that have not paid by the December 14th deadline we will then move to waitlisted students to attend the trip with payment. This is a great opportunity for students of all abilities and experience to advance their skills with qualified Winsport instructors. No prior experience is necessary to attend this field trip. The students will be travelling to Canada Olympic Park by school bus with their teachers. The bus will depart the school at 9:50am and return to the school at 3:00pm. Please ensure your child is at the school by 9:10am if they do not ride the school bus regularly. Students that miss the bus will be required to spend the day working on class assignments at school. There is a $57 cost for participating in this day, which includes all gear rentals, lessons, student hill pass and transportation. Students can bring their own skis or snowboards if they have them (price is still the same without rentals). All students are required to wear a helmet, which will also be provided. Payment must be made online in MyCBE.

Taking a moment to check in with your children about their behavior and performance in class can make a significant difference. Here are a few suggestions on how to approach this:

  • Open Dialogue: Initiate conversations about their school experiences. Ask open-ended questions that encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings about their classes, teachers, and peers.
  • Emphasize Respect: Highlight the importance of respect towards teachers, classmates, and the learning environment. Discuss the significance of listening attentively, participating constructively, and following classroom rules.
  • Encourage Accountability: Help your child understand the responsibility they have towards their education. Encourage them to take ownership of their actions and commitments in class.
  • Offer Support: Sometimes, children may face challenges that affect their performance or behavior. Be there to offer guidance, support, and solutions if they encounter difficulties.
  • Collaborate with Teachers: Establish a channel of communication with your child's teachers. Exchange information about your child's progress, behavior, and any concerns you may have, or concerning things shared with you that teachers may not be aware of.
  • Positive reinforcement: Giving four pieces of positive feedback to every one piece of negative feedback ensures children are willing to make changes. You need to make sure you've made lots of deposits before you can make a withdrawal!

Remember, fostering respect and encouraging their best effort isn’t just about grades; it's about instilling values and attitudes that will benefit them throughout their lives.
