Provincial Achievement Tests (PAT) are part of a balanced, broad-based program of student assessment for Grades 6 and 9 students. The results provide some of the information that guides our educators as they set targets for student achievement and track the results of school improvement initiatives. Visit the CBE website for more information on our students’ provincial testing.
Teachers will remain focused on delivering the programs of study for all courses and will continue to assess student achievement based on the grade level outcomes as determined by the Government of Alberta.

At Peter Lougheed, students in Grade 6 and 9 write Provincial Achievement Tests. While these tests are important from a school, district and provincial level, ongoing classroom assessments (formative and summative) are the most important measure in understanding how a specific student is doing at school. It is important for families to know how their child(ren) are doing in school. At Peter Lougheed School, learning and assessment are connected. Students use assessment feedback to improve their learning. Teachers use instruction and assessment to gather information about student progress. Teachers and students need to know what students know, how they know it, how they show it, and what they need to learn next.
What is Formative Assessment?
Formative Assessment is when students receive feedback to know how they are doing and how they might improve. Through this ongoing feedback, students and teachers can check learning to decide what to do in order to reach learning goals.
What is Summative Assessment?
Summative assessment is a comparison at a particular moment in time between individual student achievement and the outcomes of the Alberta Education Programs of Study. Multiple summative assessments, along with teacher professional judgment, are considered with evaluating student achievement against the CBE report card outcomes
Graduation from High School is our central mission at the CBE. At Peter Lougheed, we understand that working closely with our feeder schools (Saddleridge, Hugh A. Bennett and Nelson Mandela) supports the growth of strong and capable students to meet our mutual goal of high school graduation.
