Being Safe and Kind Online

Let's keep our kids safe online. Teaching them about good online behavior is important. Talk to them about being kind, staying safe, and setting rules for device use. Check their devices often to ensure they're safe while exploring online, and that any social media they are using is not being used in a harmful way. Children need consistent guidance in this, and are still learning how to use technology appropriately.

Talking to our kids about things like being polite online, keeping personal information private, and knowing how to deal with any mean behavior they might come across is really important. We can do this by having regular chats with them about what they do online and which apps they use. It's also good to have rules about how much time they spend on devices and what they do with them.

Athletics

Our wrestling team had their first tournament this week. Our girls competed on Thursday night and worked really hard and had some great matches. Our boys team will be competing tonight in the same tournament so good luck to them in their first competition.

Our senior boys basketball team capped off their undefeated regular season by winning the division championship on Monday night at Nelson Mandela High School over Crossing Park School. The game was great with a spirited crowd cheering on both teams and the boys came out on top with our athletes playing so well. As the division champions the boys were also able to play in the first ever City Championships for basketball. On Wednesday our boys headed to Captain Nichola Goddard School and won their quarter final match against Riverside school in a super close game. The boys then went on to play the undefeated F.E. Osborne school and played their hearts out in a loss. We are so proud of the boys for all of their hard work and bringing home the first banner for Peter Lougheed this year.

Volleyball will be starting up in January after the winter break and to get our students back and ready to go for the season we will be starting a volleyball club next week with the following dates and times for each group. Tuesday's 8:00-9:00 am grade 8 & 9 boys, Tuesday's 3:45-5:00 pm grade 6 & 7 boys, Wednesday's 8:00-9:00 am grade 8 & 9 girls & Wednesday's 3:45-5:00 pm grade 6 & 7 girls. All students are welcome to come out when they can to work on improving their skills.

Physical Education

A reminder that we will be doing some outdoor modules during winter months and the students need to come prepared with jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves or mitts and boots can be beneficial too to keep feet from getting cold. Also a reminder that if students are wearing crocs to school they also need to be bringing footwear to participate in pe class as crocs do not give students any ankle support and they are likely to break their ankles participating in pe.

Our Grade 7, 8 & 9 students will be going to Winsport located in the City of Calgary to participate in a full day of Ski and Snowboard Lessons in the new year. There are only 120 spots for this field trip per grade due to Winsport’s availability of instructors that day. We will take students on a on a first come first serve basis based on forms handed in to the Physical Education Office. Grade 9 students must have forms and payment in by Thursday December 14th to secure a spot. Grade 7 & 8 students must have forms and payment in by Thursday December 21st to secure a spot. Any students that have not paid by the December 14th and 21st deadline we will then move to waitlisted students to attend the trip with payment. This is a great opportunity for students of all abilities and experience to advance their skills with qualified Winsport instructors. No prior experience is necessary to attend this field trip. The students will be travelling to Canada Olympic Park by school bus with their teachers. The bus will depart the school at 9:50am and return to the school at 3:30pm. Please ensure your child is at the school by 9:10am if they do not ride the school bus regularly. Students that miss the bus will be required to spend the day working on class assignments at school. There is a $57 cost for participating in this day, which includes all gear rentals, lessons, student hill pass and transportation. Students can bring their own skis or snowboards if they have them (price is still the same without rentals). All students are required to wear a helmet, which will also be provided. Payment must be made online in MyCBE.

Robotics

On Friday, Nov 24, The Lords of Thunder Robotics Team faced tough opponents at a robotics competition at Crescent Height High School. We made a superb appearance against 14 high schools and 13 junior highs. Although suffering some losses, our first outing with the robot went wonderful. Our next tournament is at Joanne Cardinal-Schubert High School December 9. Wish us luck!
