Physical Education
A reminder that we will be doing some outdoor modules during winter months and the students need to come prepared with jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves or mitts and boots can be beneficial too to keep feet from getting cold. Also a reminder that if students are wearing crocs to school they also need to be bringing footwear to participate in pe class as crocs do not give students any ankle support and they are likely to break their ankles participating in pe.
Our Grade 7, 8 & 9 students will be going to Winsport located in the City of Calgary to participate in a full day of Ski and Snowboard Lessons in the new year. There are only 120 spots for this field trip per grade due to Winsport’s availability of instructors that day. We will take students on a on a first come first serve basis based on forms handed in to the Physical Education Office. Grade 9 students must have forms and payment in by Thursday December 14th to secure a spot. Grade 7 & 8 students must have forms and payment in by Thursday December 21 to secure a spot. Any students that have not paid by the December 14th and 21st deadline we will then move to waitlisted students to attend the trip with payment. This is a great opportunity for students of all abilities and experience to advance their skills with qualified Winsport instructors. No prior experience is necessary to attend this field trip. The students will be travelling to Canada Olympic Park by school bus with their teachers. The bus will depart the school at 9:50am and return to the school at 3:30pm. Please ensure your child is at the school by 9:10am if they do not ride the school bus regularly. Students that miss the bus will be required to spend the day working on class assignments at school. There is a $57 cost for participating in this day, which includes all gear rentals, lessons, student hill pass and transportation. Students can bring their own skis or snowboards if they have them (price is still the same without rentals). All students are required to wear a helmet, which will also be provided. Payment must be made online in MyCBE.
Calgary Public Library Resources
Over the past two months the grade 7 classes have been taking walking field trips to the Calgary Public Library in the Genesis Centre. We have learned about some great resources that ALL CBE STUDENTS can access. On the Calgary Public Library website (Digital Resource Library) students can access the following resources. Their username is the first part of their cbe email and the password is 1234567.
- SOLARO: Alberta curriculum based study guides. Kids can study concepts, review flash cards, watch videos etc. on topics they are learning in school.
- Pronounciator: Students can design a learn at their own pace course to learn another language. The courses are based off their interests and their current understanding of the language.
- Brainfuse: Students can log onto this site (even later in the evenings) to get access to a tutor who can help them with their school work or understanding a concept. This is also FREE!
There are many more digital resources that students (and their families) can use through the Calgary Public Library. If you would like more information please visit the library!
There are also many tools and opportunities available through the library in person with a Calgary Public Library card. On Friday afternoons the Saddletowne Library has gaming sessions (video games, board games) in a meeting room for students to access for free (no registration required). There is also a creativity session on Fridays where students can use a 3D printer, art supplies, sewing machines, cricuts etc. to create whatever they want (no registration and also free)! We also learned that the Calgary public library offers $5.00 of free printing each month to each library card. This is a great option for kids wanting to print assignments. Through the library students can borrow laptops to take home, access desktops and laptops to use while at the library, and even book meeting rooms to study or work on group assignments. They can also put holds on books from across the city and they will be brought to the Saddletowne location for convenient pick up.
Library card accounts can be set up online through the Calgary Public Library’s website or they can created in person at the library. Library accounts allow students to access resources from any library branch in the city. We hope you and your family will visit the library to access these great resources and foster a love of learning. Happy reading!
