Oct. 14th - 18th

October 14th – NO SCHOOL – Thanksgiving

From Administration:

Please remember when dropping off or picking up your children to choose safety over convenience. We have noticed many parents stopping their vehicles in the middle of the road and dropping off students or beckoning their children to step into traffic to get into their vehicles. There has been more than one narrow escape with a student nearly getting hit by a car when jaywalking to meet their parents. Illegal U-turns and parking in the bus zone endanger your child and others. Please take that bit of extra time and pick a meeting spot that is in a safe area.

Urgent:  Update Demographic Forms

This request is now URGENT.

We are still waiting for many families to complete their Online Annual Forms.   Please sign in to your MyCBE/PowerSchool account, select Online Forms.

Fees in PowerSchool

Families, please ensure you are checking PowerSchool regularly for fees.   New fees are added throughout the year.  You may also have historical fees from previous school years.

Walk for Wenjack

On Friday, October 18, PLS students will be participating in Walk for Wenjack.  Chanie Wenjack was an Anishinaabe boy from Ogoki Post in Ontario who attended Cecilia Jeffrey Residential School near Kenora, Ontario.   Due to the conditions at the school, Chanie ran away and tried to make his way home to Ogoki Post which was 400 miles away.   Chanie died of exposure and was discovered near the train tracks by a CP Rail worker.   Chanie’s story has been told in countless works including Maclean’s magazine, Gord Downie and Jeff Lemire’s collaboration Secret Path and Joseph Boyden’s novella Wenjack.  Learning activities in classrooms familiarizing students with Chanie’s story will be occurring next week.

As a lead up and an opportunity to raise some money for the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack fund, which supports Truth and Reconciliation efforts in Canada, the PLS PE department will be hosting a STAFF vs STUDENTS dodgeball game on Thursday Oct. 17 during the first half of lunch time. The cost is $2 for students to enter, and all grades are invited during this time.

Landscaping and Construction Update

Our outdoor landscaping began on September 30th and is taking place on the south and east sides of the school. Contractors have put up fencing to ensure nobody is in the construction area, and we ask that families please remind their children to stay out of the area. The construction is expected to finish at the end of month, weather permitting. The south side stairs have been demolished but the new stairs have been delayed another week. Once they are poured this weekend no one can walk on them for seven days, but hopefully we will have access by October 21-22nd

Athletics

Our boys soccer team played their final two regular season games beating Crossing Park at home and losing to Ted Harrison.  They finished second place in their division and will play Crossing Park at home on Wednesday.  Our girls' teams finished their season with a win against Prairie Sky and finished third in their division and will play Crossing Park on Thursday.  Good luck to both teams in their playoff matches. A reminder that we need all soccer players to pay their fees on PowerSchool as soon as possible.

Our junior girls team played two games on Monday and fought hard in two losses. Our junior boys basketball team played two home games with a win in the first and a tie in the second in an exciting game. Our senior girls played two tough matches in losses this week and our senior boys hosted and won both and remain undefeated on the season.  Go Thunder Go! A reminder that we need all basketball players to pay their fees on PowerSchool as soon as possible.

Athletic Schedule

Please ensure that if your child is planning to try out for an athletic team that they have turned in their athletic tryout purple form to the phys ed office.  If students still need this form, they can pick one up from the pe office in the gym.

Physical Education

Just a reminder to all parents to ensure students are coming with proper clothing so they can participate in Physical Education class.  The weather is getting colder in the mornings so we need to have students come prepared to be outside.  Also, any students wearing crocs or sandals/flip flops will not be allowed to participate in the activities as there are major safety concerns with these types of footwear.
