CUPE Local 40 Strike

During the CUPE strike our facilities personnel will not be at school, but in-person classes will continue. There are some changes to how things are operating at school, and they are outlined in detail in an email sent from the CBE to families and on this page.

CBE CUPE 40 Strike Information

One of the important differences is that there are no spectators at athletic events, except for parents and siblings of players. Siblings must be supervised by their parents/guardians.

Ramadan

Peter Lougheed School has protected time for students who wish to pray during Ramadan.  Two rooms are available from 2:00pm-2:30pm daily for students to access.   Information has been included in the daily announcement slides which are read to students during morning classes by teachers.

Traffic Safety

We have noticed an alarming increase in unsafe behavior at pick up and drop off. Parents stopping in the middle of the road without pulling over to drop off students; Parents stopping in the middle of the road to pick up students; Parents driving through the crosswalk while students are trying to safely cross; Parents performing U-turns in the middle of the road; Parents double parking in the road and blocking traffic; Parents blocking the driveway of the staff parking lot. Most concerning are the parents who call their children to walk through the traffic to pick them up, sometimes even between the buses. There have been numerous near misses and close calls. We are extremely concerned there will be a tragic accident. We understand it can be frustrating with the level of traffic but saving a few minutes of time is not worth the potential for tragedy. We suggest choosing a meeting spot with your child that is a little farther away if you must drive them. Better yet, if you live in the walk zone you can get your children to dress warmly and have them walk which would reduce the traffic significantly.

It is very important that families at Peter Lougheed School are made aware of the safety issue around crosswalk safety, for example:

-Wait for vehicles to stop before crossing

-While crossing, continue to watch approaching vehicles to make sure they are stopping

-If possible, cross as a group, you are more visible

-Walk through the crosswalk, do not run

Athletics

We had a very busy week of volleyball this week. Our athletes on both the senior teams and the junior boys finished off their tournaments last weekend playing some great volleyball with all of our teams winning some sets and learning a ton.  This week our junior boys and senior boys started the week off playing at Prairie Sky and split sets with them.  Our junior girls and senior girls played at home vs Prairie Sky and our juniors split and our seniors won both.  On Wednesday our boys teams hosted Annie Gale and our senior boys had two super exciting sets winning the first 26-24 and the second 25-23 in some amazing volleyball.  Our junior boys had a little more trouble losing both to Gale but continue to show strong serving and continue to work on their skills.  Our girls went to Gale on Thursday and girls played some amazing volleyball with some very long rallies but came up short in both.  We are super proud of all of the efforts our volleyball teams have been making this season.  Regular season will finish off next week followed by playoffs the following week.  Good luck to all of our teams and Go Thunder Go!!

Athletic Schedule

Please ensure that if your child is planning to try out for an athletic team that they have turned in their athletic tryout purple form to the phys ed office.  If students still need this form, they can pick one up from the pe office in the gym.
