Time Change

Student Progress Conferences

Student Progress Conferences are being hosted online via Microsoft Teams.   Starting at 9am on Monday, March 10, parents and guardians will be able to book a conference with their child’s teacher(s).   All bookings are done via the parent portal of PowerSchool.   Interpreters will be available via our Language Lines services – please let teachers know if you require an interpreter and in which language.

Athletics

Our volleyball teams finished off their seasons with matches against Crossing Park this week.  Our jr. Boys played some tough matches and kept the games close but came up short and finished in 6th place in the division.  Our sr. Boys played next splitting sets with Crossing Park and finished the season in second place in the division.  On Thursday we hosted our girls games and our sr. Girls started us off playing some hard volleyball but losing both sets to Crossing to finish third place in the division and finally our jr. Girls showed some great skills in two losses to Crossing and finished the division in sixth place.  All of our teams will be in the quarter-finals next week.  Good luck to all of our teams in playoffs and Go Thunder Go!!

Athletic Schedule

Please ensure that if your child is planning to try out for an athletic team that they have turned in their athletic tryout purple form to the phys ed office.  If students still need this form, they can pick one up from the pe office in the gym.

Physical Education

We will be starting new modules this week.  -1 & -2 classes will be doing juggling and racquet sports including badminton and pickleball.  -3 & -4 classes will be doing outdoor games and health so students need to be prepared to go outside with warm clothes and gloves/mitts if the weather permits, and finally –5 & -6 classes will be doing low organized games and health classes.  These modules will be going on for the two week leading up to spring break and the week after spring break.

CUPE Local 40 Strike

During the CUPE strike our facilities personnel will not be at school, but in-person classes will continue. There are some changes to how things are operating at school, and they are outlined in detail in an email sent from the CBE to families and on this page.

CBE CUPE 40 Strike Information

One of the important differences is that there are no spectators at athletic events, except for parents and siblings of players. Siblings must be supervised by their parents/guardians.

Ramadan

Peter Lougheed School has protected time for students who wish to pray during Ramadan.  Two rooms are available from 2:00pm-2:30pm daily for students to access.   Information has been included in the daily announcement slides which are read to students during morning classes by teachers.

Considering the time change coming this weekend, the window for prayers may allow most of our students to pray when they get home. If this is possible for your child we would encourage this to ensure less class time is being missed.

Traffic Safety

We have noticed an alarming increase in unsafe behavior at pick up and drop off. Parents stopping in the middle of the road without pulling over to drop off students; Parents stopping in the middle of the road to pick up students; Parents driving through the crosswalk while students are trying to safely cross; Parents performing U-turns in the middle of the road; Parents double parking in the road and blocking traffic; Parents blocking the driveway of the staff parking lot. Most concerning are the parents who call their children to walk through the traffic to pick them up, sometimes even between the buses. There have been numerous near misses and close calls. We are extremely concerned there will be a tragic accident. We understand it can be frustrating with the level of traffic but saving a few minutes of time is not worth the potential for tragedy. We suggest choosing a meeting spot with your child that is a little farther away if you must drive them. Better yet, if you live in the walk zone you can get your children to dress warmly and have them walk which would reduce the traffic significantly.

It is very important that families at Peter Lougheed School are made aware of the safety issue around crosswalk safety, for example:

-Wait for vehicles to stop before crossing

-While crossing, continue to watch approaching vehicles to make sure they are stopping

-If possible, cross as a group, you are more visible

-Walk through the crosswalk, do not run
