Traffic Safety

We have noticed an alarming increase in unsafe behavior at pick up and drop off. Parents stopping in the middle of the road without pulling over to drop off students; Parents stopping in the middle of the road to pick up students; Parents driving through the crosswalk while students are trying to safely cross; Parents double parking in the road and blocking traffic; Parents blocking the driveway of the staff parking lot. Most concerning are the parents who call their children to walk through the traffic to pick them up, sometimes even between the buses. There have been numerous near misses and close calls. We are extremely concerned there will be a tragic accident. We understand it can be frustrating with the level of traffic but saving a few minutes of time is not worth the potential for tragedy. We suggest choosing a meeting spot with your child that is a little farther away if you must drive them. Better yet, if you live in the walk zone you can get your children to dress warmly and have them walk which would reduce the traffic significantly.

Athletics

Our junior boys started their season off with a couple of tough matches against Terry Fox and came up short in both sets but learned a lot and played great volleyball.  Our senior boys won both of their sets against Fox and showed some great serving skills and teamwork.  Our junior girls split their home games against Fox this week working hard to get three hits.  They also played in the HD Cartwright tournament this week with the tournament ending Friday afternoon.  Finally, our senior girls team stayed undefeated with two wins against Fox in some back and forth volleyball.  All of our teams will be playing Clarence Sansom next week with our girls teams playing at home on Tuesday so come out and cheer on the girls.

A reminder if students are staying to watch the home games that they have rides lined up ahead of time if they are not walking home from the school.  Also that they are being respectful while watching the teams play.

Athletic Schedule

Please ensure that if your child is planning to try out for an athletic team that they have turned in their athletic tryout purple form to the phys ed office.  If students still need this form, they can pick one up from the pe office in the gym.

Robotics

Dear Parents,

Last weekend, the Peter Lougheed Robotics Team went to Nelson Mandela high school to compete with schools from all over Calgary. At the competition, we competed with many high schoolers, learned new skills, got great advice, and improved our robot. Although we didn't win, our team worked well together, putting a lot of effort into building and programming our robot for the competition. On Monday Feb. 10 and Wednesday Feb.12, we will be selling candy to fundraise to buy parts for next year’s robotics team. Thanks to all the parents, students, and staff who supported us in our endeavors this year.
